Bill, Dava Diorama

The Invasion of Normandy
D-Day
6 June 1944

It was at this desk and on this radio that Major General William C. Lee and his wife, Dava, listened to the D-Day news broadcasts. Bill rose from his sick bed and spent the entire night absorbing every detail of this invasion. The climax of what he strived to achieve in his 27 years of military service was coming to fruition and he was no longer an acting participant. His spirits received a wonderful boost when he was informed that the paratroopers of the 101st Division, the “Screaming Eagles”, yelled “Bill Lee” instead of  “Geronimo” when they jumped from their aircraft.  On 15 June 1944 Bill wrote the division a letter thanking them for the honor. Bill’s life work had worked to perfection. The 101st and the 82D Airborne Divisions covered themselves with glory. The “Father of the Airborne” was justly proud of all his men but he remained heart broken that he did not make the D-Day jump with his men.
